The Galloway Dance Ensemble showcases new dance works in its concert on Friday, Jan. 24 at 7 p.m. and Saturday, Jan. 25 at 4 p.m.

The Upper Learning students who make up the Ensemble will perform three pieces choreographed by Director of Dance Studies, Sally Cramer and teacher Lane Salter.

The featured piece, based on the themes of children’s book The Rainbow Fish, is an original, collaborative piece created with Galloway senior Matthew Tennant.

Tennant engaged around developing a narrative for the piece, basing it on themes from the book.

The performance is appropriate for all ages and the featured piece will present a magical undersea world through movement, with costumes by Misao Cates and lighting design by Issac Ramsey.

The styles of dance include modern, ballet and hip hop.

The Winter Dance Concert will include 45 students, with 42 Upper Learning dancers, 1 Upper Learning writer and 2 Middle Learning dancers. These students have been rehearsing since the start of school in August. The dance program begins in Middle Learning.

Admission is free, but the group is collecting contributions at the door for Wellspring Living, a nonprofit that confronts the issue of childhood sexual abuse and exploitation.

On Jan. 31–Feb. 2, the Galloway Theatre Company will present "She Kills Monsters," an award-winning play by Qui Nguyen.

Directed by J. Scott McNair, this comedic romp into the world of role-playing games will feature the talented students of the Galloway community.

"She Kills Monsters" premiered in 2011 and was awarded the 2013 American Alliance for Theatre and Education Distinguished Play Award.

The action-packed script called for bringing in the talents of fight choreographer Allen O’Reilly, who often works with Georgia Shakespeare, to stage the sucker punches and eviscerations (needless to say, this play is more suitable for audiences over 13).

The play involves 10 actors and 5 technicians. Rehearsals began in early November, immediately after "The Tempest" closed.

Performances will take place in the Black Box Theatre in the Chaddick Center on Jan. 31 at 7:30 p.m. and Feb. 1-2 at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $10 and will go on sale online at gallowayschool.org on Jan. 13.
