Eager students compete in regional event

  • Accomplishment: Team gave strong performance in state regional competition of Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl.
  • In October, Sutton's School Academic Committee asked the school's student body "do you love to read?" and "how fast can you press the button?" A total of 26 students responded for the school's team to compete in the Helen Ruffin Reading Bowl, according to the school. They committed to reading 20 books to qualify to represent Sutton in the quiz-bowl style competition, and prepared over winter break and during the city's snow days. Last weekend, the team participated in the regional tournament at Clayton State University. In the event,  competing teams are asked questions about their knowledge of the books, and team members try to be the first to press a buzzer to present the answers.  In the regional competition, Sutton's team strongly improved its performance over last year, although it didn't advance to divisional competition.  Team members, coached by media specialist Patti George, are Bethany Bell, seventh grade; Emma Boardman, sixth grade; Audrey Broffman, sixth grade; Niki Conrad; Vajraang Kamat, seventh grade;  Lucas Livaditis, sixth grade; Tessa Richardson, sixth grade; Rebecca Rowen, sixth grade; Fatima Salman, sixth grade; and Benjamin Yarmowich, seventh grade. Sixth graders Miguel Wilson and and Caridad Robinson were alternates.
