Chancellor Named Interim APS Superintendent

Erroll Davis to take office July 1.

The Atlanta Board of Education on Monday appointed University System of Georgia Chancellor Erroll B. Davis as interim APS superintendent.

The school board made the appointment at a special legislative meeting Monday afternoon, according to an annoucement from APS. Davis, who is retiring from the university system on June 30, will take the superintendent's job July 1, replacing  Beverly Hall.

“We are pleased that a person of Mr. Davis’ experience and reputation has graciously agreed to take the APS helm on an interim basis during this time of challenge for both the board and the district,” said Board Chair Khaatim Sherrer El. “The board has the utmost faith in Mr. Davis’ ability to help us stay on course to resolving the issues currently impacting the board and the district.”

Those issues include getting the school system's high schools, including Buckhead's North Atlanta, off accreditation probation and dealing with the continued repercussions of a cheating scandal under Hall's administration.

The board has named three semifinalists as candidates to replace Hall permanently.

Davis has been chancellor of the university system since early 2006, according to the  APS news release. 

He previously served as chairman of the board of Alliant Energy Corp., an energy holding company with $8.3 billion in total assets, the school system said. He assumed that position in 2000.

His higher education experience includes serving as a member of the University of Wisconsin System Board of Regents from 1987 to 1994, and as a former chairman of the board of trustees of Carnegie Mellon University, the APS annoucment said. He currently serves as a member of the Southern Regional Education Board and was previously a member of the Board of Trustees of the University of Chicago.

A native of Pittsburgh, Davis holds a bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and an MBA in finance degree from the University of Chicago.

Davis will remain as APS interim superintendent until the school board names a permanent replacement for Hall, who leaves office June 30.
