Westminster Boys' Soccer Faces Old Foe in Final Four

Wildcats to battle Cross Keys for trip to the state finals.

The Westminster  boys’ soccer team will face a familiar foe tonight as they take on Cross Keys High School in the state semifinals.

The two teams met  in April with Westminster coming away with a 4-1 victory.

“Cross Keys is in our region; we play them every year,” said Westminster athletic director Rusty Hudson. “We have a good working relationship with them, the coaches are even friends, but they are highly competitive with one another. We have great respect for their program.”

The two teams square off at 8 p.m. today at Westminster for a chance to play in the state championship. Westminster is 17-4 on the season, and has been on a roll through the postseason, shutting out every team they have played so far.

“(Coach Scott Snyder) Hass been here for a dozen years,” Hudson said. “He’s won a handful of state championships. He always gets the best out of the kids.”

Westminster is trying to shake off an early exit from last year’s state tournament, when they were eliminated in the first round. The year before they advanced to the finals, where they lost in the championship game.

“Every year it’s an adventure,” Hudson said. “We want the kids to strive to excel and do the best they can and live with those results. It’s really all about what the kids put into it. We have excellent coaches and kids that truly love their sport, but so do many of the other schools we play. It makes for really good competition.”
