Westminster to Hold Commencement Saturday

Emory director of sustainability to speak

Ciannat Howett, director of sustainability initiatives at Emory University, will speak at Westminster's commencement ceremony Saturday.

The graduation will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday on the Pressly Hall Lawn, according to the school's website. Aterward, a reception for seniors and guests will be held on the Love Patio.

Class valedictorians are Hannah Weiss and Spencer Nash, and the salutatorians Melissa Klein and David Fridovich-Keil.

The class of 2011's baccalaureate service will be at 6:30 p.m Friday in McCain Chapel of Pressly Hall, with the Rev. Dr. C. Gray Norsworthy, senior pastor of Johns Creek Presbyterian Church, speaking.

A graduate of the University of Virginia Law School,  Howett became Emory's first director of sustainability initiatives in September 2006. She is a trustee for the R. Howard Dobbs, Jr. Foundation and is on the Board of Emory Law School’s Turner Environmental Law Clinic, the Hambidge Center for Creative Arts & Sciences, the Livable Communities Coalition, Sustainable Atlanta Board of Directors, Grants to Green Advisory Board, DeKalb County’s Green Commission, and Agnes Scott’s National Sustainability Advisory Committee, according to Westminster's Web site.

She received the 2002 U.S. EPA Gold Medal for Exceptional Service, the 2004 Environmental Hero Award from The Wilderness Society, and the 2010 Pillar of Sustainability Award from Earth University. 

A Westminster alumnus, the Rev. Norswothy has been a Presbyterian minister for more than 25 yeas. He has also served as the senior chaplain of the Big Canoe Chapel, the senior pastor of Shallowford Presbyterian Church in Atlanta, senior pastor of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Staunton, Va., and associate pastor at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Snellville.
