Whiz Kid of the Week: Westminster Seventh Grader Nilai Sarda

Georgia Geographic Bee champion to compete for national title

Nilai Sarda, a Westminster seventh grader, will compete for the National Geographic Bee championship after winning the state title in the event.

Nilai won over 100 competitors in the Georgia Geographic Bee April 1 at Georgia College in Milledgeville, according to an announcement from the school. He will participate in the national championship, sponsored by the National Geographic Society, May 24-25 in Washington. Alex Trebek  of "Jeopardy" will be the host of the event, in which Nilai will vie against more than 54 competitors in grades 4 to 8 for a $25,000 scholarship.

In the state finals, Nilai and his opponent both answered five questions correctly. He won the event when he gave the right answer, "Pakistan," to the question “What is the most populous Muslim country that uses the currency called the Rupee?” His opponent answered Indonesia.

According to the school, Nilai spends at 45 minutes to an hour each day during the week, and two to threee hours over the weekend preparing for competitions. He uses Google in his searches and has created a profile for every country in the world, where more thn 190 countries are detailed in a 400-plus- page Word document. Before every major competition, Nilai reviews the document, which has taken more than years to create.
