The Atlanta Braves didn’t have to win Sunday to clinch the top spot in the National League East, but they did anyway.

Midway through the Braves’ game against the Chicago Cubs, NL East foe Washington dropped its first game of the day against Miami, guaranteeing that Atlanta would remain atop its division and earn a spot in the National League Division Series a year after going just one game into the postseason. The Braves put an exclamation mark on their historic day by topping the Cubs 5-2 and taking the weekend series.

Seven games remain in the season, and only time will tell whom the Braves will face with the playoffs begin. As of Sunday afternoon, the only other National League teams guaranteed playing time in October are Los Angeles, which won the West Division, and St. Louis, which has clinched a spot in the postseason but not the NL Central crown.
