Two Blocks of Piedmont Road Closed for 2½ Hours After Accident

Broken gas main capped at Roswell and Piedmont

A woman driver's car ran into Tin Lizzy's Restaurant at Piedmont and Roswell Roads this morning and ruptured a gas line, Atlanta police reported. The woman, whom police say left the scene, was later arrested after turning herself in. The gas line was capped shortly before noon, and the two blocks of Piedmont Road from Habersham to Roswell roads reopened, except for the right hand turn lane onto Roswell Road from Piedmont. Gas crews dug into the pavement in that lane to stop the gas leak. Atlanta police arrested Azra Mrkalj, 25, the driver of the car that crashed into the restuarant. She was charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failure to maintain lane, and failure to notify the owner upon striking a fixture, according to police …

Freedom Riders Embark on 1,035-Mile Journey

Team of 12, including three Buckhead firefighters, mark 10th anniversary of Sept. 11

Buckhead Station 21 firefighter Mike Palmeri looked around the crowd gathered at the Terminus Building Friday morning to send the Freedom Riders off on their 1,035-mile journey to New York City for the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11. "It's pretty exciting, man," Palmeri said, with a shake of his head. "I can't believe it's all happening." Palmeri, who first thought he'd make the trip alone, then watched his idea grow into a team effort with widespread community support in Buckhead, said he was eager to get going after months of grueling training and fund-raising. The journey received major corporate support from Buckhead-based Aaron's. "We'r doing it for the 343 firefighters who perished (on Sept. 11)," said Palmeri, an Elllijay resident.  "…
