Atlanta Public Schools Come Off Probation

SACS said the board of education has made much progress in resolving its problems.

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools has removed the Atlanta Public Schools from probation, giving some much-needed positive news to a district battered by two scandals this year. SACS left the district on "Advisement," meaning there are a couple of issues the accrediting agency wants to continue to monitor in the next 12 months to ensure APS' board doesn't backslide into problems. SACS, which in January placed the district on probation, threatened to remove APS' accreditation — essentially making high school diplomas worthless — if board members failed to make significant improvements on six action items: In its 12-page report, SACS found the board completed four of those six action items. On the two that still needed …

Clayton County loses accreditation and had no cheating scandal just drama among administrators. APS has one of the largest cheating scandals in history and is given a pass by SACS. The Clayton County community should be mad as hell right now. Give it time and the Fulton DA's office will simply drop its investigation citing, "Well, its nothing for us to do now, SACS kept the accreditation and …   more ›

Sam Massell: Buckhead a Part of City

Buckhead Coalition president in opinion article says cheating scandal hits home here too

Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell, in an opinion article for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, says that Buckhead can't isolate itself from the rest of Atlanta. Massell's piece notes that Buckhead schools were not implicated in the APS CRCT cheating scandal. Yet, he says, Buckhead must still see itself as sharing the problems and benefits of the rest of the city. The article appeared Saturday on The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's opinion page.

The mayor either needs to do some research about his northside buckhead APS schools or try not to so foolishly contribute to the cover-up. Shame on those not reporting the ENTIRE story of APS corruption Northside APS included.   more ›

About 30 leave APS in cheating scandal

Erroll Davis says administrative process to begin

Interim APS Superintendent Erroll B. Davis said Thursday night that about 30 employees implicated in the CRCT cheating scandal have left the school system. Because of resignations and retirements, "we're in the 130s to 140s, not 178," Davis said in response to a question at a town hall meeting at Garden Hills Elementary School. He said that the administrators and teachers remaining will receive their due process rights, but vowed that none will be teaching students.  Here is a summary of Davis' remarks in response to questions from the audience at the town hall meeting.

A healing leader for APS

Erroll Davis brings hopeful message to Buckhead meeting

The healing has begun for the Atlanta Public Schools. That's the overall message delivered by Interim APS Superintendent Erroll Davis, who answered questions for an hour and half Thursday night at a town hall meeting organized by Buckhead school board member Nancy Meister at Garden Hills Elementary School. Davis, the retired University of Georgia chancellor who's taken over the APS schools for a year after a devastating report on the CRCT cheating scandal and the system being placed on accreditation probation, said he grew up in the Baptist church, and the session displayed the hope and redemption of an old-fashioned revival meeting. Along with Davis and Meister, top APS administrators and most of Buckhead's principals attended the meeting…

Rep. Lindsey Calls SB 79 a "Safety Net"

Buckhead representative sends letter to BCN members to explain legilsation

State Rep. Ed Lindsey (R-54th District) has sent a letter to Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods members about SB 79, which allows Gov. Nathan Deal to remove Atlanta School Board members in the school accreditation process.  During the BCN's May meeting, Rep. Elly Dobbs faced criticism over her support of the legislation, which Lindsey authored in the House. Lindsey told the BCN in his letter that he did not attend the meeting because of his twins' high school graduation. During the meeting, BCN members also criticized the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools and its parent organization, AdvancED, for having monopoly power over accreditation in Georgia. Glenn Delk, a BCN member and an attorney who represented a group of school board …
