Buckhead Heritage Society Celebrates 175 Years

The organization has several events planned to celebrate the momentous anniversary.

In 1838, for just $650, Henry Irby purchased 202 ½ acres surrounding the present intersection of Peachtree, Roswell, and West Paces Ferry roads. He soon established a general store at the junction and a small crossroads community was born. This year, Buckhead Heritage and the Buckhead Business Association will celebrate the 175th anniversary of the founding of the community with an evening party at the Buckhead Theatre, which stands at the historic hub of this once far-flung, rural settlement. Guests at the event will enjoy drinks, hors d'oeuvres, and great music from the band Atlanta Allstars. A photographic retrospective of Buckhead’s history will also educate, entertain, and encourage guests to share their own memories of this …

Architects Document Randolph-Lucas Mansion on Monday

The architects were also helping provide a more precise cost estimate for moving the historic home and for rehabilitating it.

If you passed the historic Randolph-Lucas Mansion on Monday, you saw several people buzzing about the home dwarfed by the yellow condos behind it. The Buckhead Heritage Society has offered the home, built in 1924, for free to anyone willing to pay the costs to move the home, which initially was estimated to cost $350,000. The 2500 Peachtree Condominium Association had planned to demolish the mansion, which sits on their property, because they said the building was unsafe. However, a building inspection deemed the house structurally sound. Several of the people at the Randolph-Lucas House in their hard hats and with their measuring tape Monday were architects documenting the home for archival purposes, Erica Danylchak of the Buckhead …

Randolph Lucas Mansion Gets 120-Day Reprieve

The historic home will be safe at least for the next four months, and the Buckhead Heritage Society hopes it will be moved by then.

The historic Randolph-Lucas Mansion, which sits in front of a condominium complex at 2500 Peachtree Road, will be saved, at least for another 120 days. On Tuesday, the Buckhead Heritage Society signed an agreement with the condo association for the four-month reprieve, which prevents the  1920s-era home to be torn down during that period. The Buckhead Heritage Society is hoping to save the home in that time. The condo association planned to retrieve its permit that following day, to demolish the mansion, so the agreement comes just in time, according to WXIA-TV 11 Alive. The house, which is about 2,700 square feet, is free to anyone who will pay the roughly $350,000 moving cost. Wright Mitchell, president of the Buckhead Heritage Society, …

Strong Support Shown for Randolph-Lucas House

At Tuesday's NPU-B meeting, concerned residents and committee members voiced their non-binding opinion to deny the condo association's appeal to demolish the historic structure.

Concerned Buckhead residents packed out a meeting room in the Hyland Center at Cathedral Christ the King Church on Tuesday night to fight the possible demolition of the Randolph-Lucas House on Peachtree Road. The "Comments Only" hearing was part of the NPU-B Zoning Committee's monthly meeting. Attorney Hakim Hilliard of McKenna, Long & Aldridge was speaking on behalf of the Condo Association at 2500 Peachtree Street and told the zoning committee and those in attendance that his client has every intention of demolishing the historic home. However, they would prefer it be done on the grounds that it is an unsafe building, he said.  "The condo association intends to demolish this structure," Hilliard said. "We want to do it now because our …

Why can't the house be used in its current location for anything? No doubt that condo assoc could use the money if they rented it out to a business.   more ›

Randolph-Lucas House Facing Possible Demolition

The 2500 Peachtree Condominium Association has applied for a demolition permit from the City of Atlanta Office of Buildings for the historic Randolph-Lucas House.

Located at the intersection of Peachtree Road and Lindbergh Drive, the Randolph-Lucas House is an elegant Georgian style building that was designed by P. Thornton Marye in 1924. Historical significance aside, the 2500 Peachtree Condominium Association has applied for a demolition permit from the City of Atlanta Office of Buildings to demolish the Randolph-Lucas House. The Condo Association claims that the building is unsafe and is an imminent threat to public safety. However, the Office of Buildings concluded upon inspection that the building is structurally sound and not in a condition that endangers the public. Because of its findings, the Office of Buildings has informed the applicant that the Atlanta Urban Design Commission must review…

When the condos were being built they wanted to demolish the building. They were forced to keep it and it continues to be a requirement, and they continue to want to get rid of it. Their latest scheme has been to neglect to maintain it such that itfalls into disrepair and they can say it's unsafe and has to be demolished. Looks like their bluff has been called on this one. It's an absolute …   more ›

North Buckhead Represents 'Big Question Mark'

Buckhead Heritage Society is looking for anyone with information related to North Buckhead specifically.

When it comes to history in the Buckhead area, North Buckhead is a bit of a question mark, according to Erica Danylchak, Executive Director of Buckhead Heritage Society. Danylchak spoke at the recent Buckhead Council of Neighborhoods meeting to to ask for their help in filling in some of that missing history. While working with Livible Buckhead on their green space action plan, Danylchak said that the Heritage Society realized there was an opportunity to do something interesting with preserving the rich Buckhead community history. While they have found interesting factoids and stories about Buckhead overall, history on North Buckhead is sorely lacking. "There are large swaths of District 7 that have no history," Danylchak said, pointing to…
