Coalition of Buckhead churches putting on annual event at noon Friday

From Patch Reports The Rev. Frank McNamee, pastor of the Cathedral of Christ the King, will be the main preacher at the annual Good Friday service for the Buckhead community. The annual service by a coalition of Buckhead churches will be from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, according to the PRUMC web site. The music will be led by the church’s Chamber Singers. The service, one of two Buckhead community services during the year, will include pastors from Christ the King, Second-Ponce de Leon Baptist Church, Peachtree Road United Methodist Church, the Episcopal Cathedral of St. Philip, Peachtree Presbyterian Church and Wieuca Road Baptist Church.

From Patch Reports More than 250 young singers from across the United States are expected for the third annual Georgia Boy Choir Festival and Grand Finale Concert at Peachtree Road United Methodist Church in Buckhead Feb. 17 and 18. And all boys from third through 12th grades are welcome to participate in the event, sponsored by Atlanta's Georgia Boy Choir. No musical experience is required, according to an announcement. The festival will conclude on Saturday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. with a grand finale concert featuring all five levels of the Georgia Boy Choir, along with guest choirs the American Boychoir, the Florida Boychoir, the Palmetto State Boy Choir, the Newark Boys Chorus, the Greater Anderson, S.C., Metropolitan Arts Consortium …

Jimmy Carter-led movement gathers in Buckhead through Saturday
Second Ponce de Leon Baptist Church in Buckhead is the gathering point for the New Baptist Covenant II, led by former President Jimmy Carter. The group's three-day meeting, which began Thursday and concludes Saturday, is linking eight separate U.S. locations through streamng video and on the Internet and satellite uplinks, according to the New Baptist Covernant II web site. The New Baptist Covenant, which had its first meeting in 2008, is "an informal alliance of more than 30 racially, geographically, and theologically diverse Baptist organizations from throughout North America that claim more than 20 million members," according to its web site. Mourners fill Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King for funeral Mass
Archbishop-emeritus John F. Donoghue requested that no eulogy be given for him, the Rev. Thomas J. Hennessey said Wednesday morning to a crowd of mourners at Archbishop Donoghue's Funeral Mass at the Catholic Cathedral of Christ the King. "The statement was the man," the Rev. Hennessey said in a simple remembrance. "He fought the good fight." He recalled Archbishop Donoghue, who led the Atlanta archdiocese as its fifth archbishop from Aug. 19, 1994 to his retirement on Dec. 9, 2004, as the builder of schools. During his term, he opened 10 schools, the archdiocese said. The Rev. Hennessey also noted Archbishop Donoghue's devotion to the Eucharist and his staunch support of the pro-life movement. Traditional English flower festival continues today
The Cathedral of St. Philip glows with flowers, bringing a glorious outpouring of color to the fall season. The cathedral flower guild's "Vested Glory: Beautiful Flowers Inspired by Sacred Spaces" opened Wednesday and continues today. The traditional English flower festival shows an array of arrangements from different church flower guilds and local garden clubs. The different flower guilds, which decorate their churches for holy services, draw inspiration from each other at the show, said Kevin Criswell of Cut Flower, a Buckhead flower wholesaler. From Patch Staff St. Dunstan's pastor the Rev. Patricia Templeton conducted the annual blessing of the animals ceremony Sunday. Parishioners brought their pets for Templeton's blessing. The ritual at the Buckhead Episcopal church honored the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, which is Tuesday. The Italian saint was known for his love of animals. Buckhead Heritage Society aids Sardis United Methodist Church
Sardis United Methodist Church in Buckhead is in the final stages of being listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The church, which has continuously occupied its site on Powers Ferry Road since at least 1848 with several different buildings, received approval in early June from the Georgia National Register Review Board, according to Erica Danylchak, executive director of the Buckhead Heritage Society. The society is assisting the church in its effort to be included on the National Register. After this major step, the State Historic Preservation Office is preparing the final nomination to be sent to the National Park Service in Washington, D.C. for final review and approval.
