3 Questions With Blind Boys of Alabama Vocalist Ricky McKinnie

The Blind Boys of Alabama and Al Green perform at 8 p.m., Friday at Chastain Park Amphitheatre.

Soul and Gospel music is a winning combination. Concert-goers are going to be moving, groovin’ and probably shouting when it’s all said and done tonight at Chastain Park Amphitheatre in Buckhead. The Blind Boys of Alabama and Al Green perform at 8 p.m., Friday. “It’s going to be a foot-clapping, hand-clapping, sing-along. We’re going to lift it up,” said Ricky McKinnie. The vocalist and drummer with the Blind Boys of Alabama lives in metro Atlanta. The multi-Grammy Award-winning gospel group has a love for many different music genres, especially county. On the album, “Take the High Road,” the Blind Boys collaborated with Vince Gill, Willie Nelson, the Oak Ridge Boys, Hank Williams Jr. among others.  The 411 on The Blind Boys of Alabama: …

Patch Pix of the Day: Chastain Park Welcomes Sheep

Sheep and goats are hard at work devouring invasive kudzu vine at the Buckhead park.

The recent heroes of Chastain Park aren't lions, but lambs. On a two-acre section of the Park on Wieuca Road near The Galloway School, 100 sheep and a few goats were brought in to help eliminate invasive kudzu vine in the area. The program, called "Have Ewe Herd??" began with "Breakfast With the Sheep" on June 8, where hundreds of Atlantans came out to Chastain to meet the animals up close.  The program is being run by Trees Atlanta. The animals should be at Chastain for another week or so.

I'm very excited to see sheep and goats used in this way. Having raised sheep when I was growing up, I got to witness how good they are at clearing out unwanted vines. They are good at eating poison ivy too. Would love to see them at Henderson Park in Tucker to clear out our poison ivy here!   more ›

Atlanta Park System Ranks Below Average

As Summer begins, many people will be spending time at Atlanta parks, but could the city be doing better when it comes to green spaces?

The Atlanta park system ranks below average, according to a new study by the Trust for Public Land, a national nonprofit that conserves land for parks and playgrounds in urban and rural areas. Atlanta ranked No. 26 out of 40 cities, behind places like Boston and Portland, Ore. However, it beat out cities like Memphis and Louisville, according to a report by the Atlanta Journal Constitution. While Chastain Park in Buckhead is certainly beautiful, the study did not directly assess the quality of the parks themselves. The land trust’s “Park-Score” ratings, released last week, were based on the percentage of residents living within a 10-minute walk of a park (about half a mile), a city’s median park size and the percentage of total city area …

Trees Atlanta Hires Kudzu-Eating Sheep

Kudzu can get pretty baaaad (pardon the pun) in Atlanta. Trees Atlanta is using an eco-friendly method to rid Chastain Park of the green stuff.

Trees Atlanta and the Chastain Park Conservancy have teamed up to clean the kudzu out of Chastain Park using a method that is organic, environmentally friendly and kind of adorable: sheep. Yes, they've hired a flock of 100 sheep to munch on the kudzu that plagues Atlanta and they want everyone to come meet their new hires. They're throwing a Breakfast with the Sheep party in the park on June 8 at 9 a.m. Partygoers will be able to feed the sheep, do some arts and crafts and learn about the importance of removing invasive plants like kudzu. (Don't worry, there will be food for the humans to eat, provided by the Ritz Carlton Buckhead.) The party is free, but please RSVP to the event on Facebook. Chastain Park is just the first stop on the …

Unassisted Triple Play at Chastain Makes National News

Video of an unassisted triple play by little leaguer Ross Bernath has gone viral.

Six-year-old Ross Bernath made an unassisted triple play during a recent game at Chastain Park, as reported by USA Today. The video of the play has gone viral on YouTube and been featured on ESPN. Ross made the unassisted triple play which, in the history of even Major League Baseball, only 15 of have ever been recorded dating back to 1909. Ross caught a pop fly for the first out, stepped on third base to out the runner there for the second one, and tagged out another runner trying to advance for the third out. According to the NYO Little League website, Ross already made at least one or two unassisted double plays this season and he has recorded all three outs in an inning on several occasions.
