Sydney Faux is a standout third grade student at Garden Hills Elementary.
Making the APS spotlight this week is Sydney Faux, a third grader at Garden Hills Elementary who stands out for her two most recent achievements. According to the TalkUp APS blog, Sydney recently took bragging rights at her school by beating out all of her older middle school competitors in a school-wide spelling bee. She also did hugely well at the district-level spelling bee where she placed third overall. "The pint-sized prodigy also impressed Atlanta Public Schools Technology Fair judges last month with a pretty spectacular project about how she won the Garden Hills spelling bee two years in a row," says APS. Garden Hills students and parents received word last week that Tommy Usher, their interim principal, has dropped the 'interim' from his title.
Garden Hills Elementary School, which serves the Buckhead neighborhoods including Garden Hills, Peachtree Park, Peachtree Heights and Lindridge/Martin Manor, recently announced that Tommy Usher is its newly appointed full-time principal. According to the announcement on the Garden Hills Elementary website, the school family is "thrilled to have him as our permanent principal and look forward to continuing the great work he has started with the Garden Hills Elementary School teaching staff." With school starting back soon on August 6, it is time again to begin shopping for school supplies. Here is a list of what each public elementary school in Buckhead is recommending for their students to have for the upcoming school year. Garden Hills Elementary has chosen its interim principal after former principal Amy Wilson Alderman submitted her resignation effective June 30. Tommy Usher will be the new principal, according to Buckhead View. Information provided by Atlanta Public Schools lists Usher's former job as principal of Sarah Smith Elementary School in Atlanta. According to the Sarah Smith School’s website, Usher received his bachelor’s in early childhood education from Clark Atlanta University and later obtained his master’s in education in curriculum and instruction development from Central Michigan University. The principal of Garden Hills Elementary has reportedlt submitted her resignation. Amy Wilson Alderman submitted her resignation effective June 30, according to Reporter Newspapers. Atlanta Public Schools spokesman Keith Bromery told the paper that Alderman submitted her resignation on Monday, citing “personal reasons.” Stay with Patch as more details become available.

There was a light turnout at the Atlanta Public Schools' public bugetary hearing held at Garden Hills Elementary in Buckhead on Thursday night. The few that did show up came ready with questions, however, which were fielded by APS Chief Financial Officer Chuck Burbridge. The hearing was held to give concerned citizens a chance to ask questions about the proposed 2012-13 budget of $564.8 million. The district is aiming to close a $47 million shortfall by nixing 475 jobs — including teachers — closing seven schools, reorganizing departments and dropping those administrators and classroom instructors involved in the cheating scandal under the watch of former schools superintendent Beverly Hall. Garden Hills Parent Teacher Association hosted a forum to discuss possible impact on Buckhead area schools.
Garden Hills Parent Teacher Association members met Friday morning to address four possible options for changes to Atlanta Public School Districts. Currently, up to 12 schools could close. Charts showing visuals for the different options were displayed for parents to see. Atlanta Board of Education District 4 Representative Nancy Meister was at the meeting to address concerns and answer questions. Meister reiterated that the process is still in early phases, “I cannot stress how this is such a beginning point.” The original four redistricting options currently being presented to the public were developed based solely on cost and capacity. Eight additional temp buildings bring total to 16
Sutton Middle School, already crowded, is receiving even more students this year. As of Monday morning, Buckhead's only middle school had reached nearly 1,400 students, an official said, with more coming in. The school had about 1,300 students at the end of last year. The school now has 16 temporary buidings, an increase of eight over last year, said Leigh Darby, co-president of the PTA. "We have a lot of new kids, a lot of new faces," Darby said Monday morning, standing at the school's front desk as more parents came in to register their children. Interim APS Superintendent Erroll B. Davis Jr. will appear Thursday night at a community meeting held by Buckhead school board member Nancy Meister.
