Charlie Loudermilk Statue Unveiled in Birthday Surprise

Aaron's founder receives surprise party at Charlie Loudermilk Park

Buckhead icon Charlie Loudermilk received a grand birthday surprise Tuesday morning: A statue of the Aaron's Inc. founder was unveiled at the Buckhead park that bears his name. Upon arriving at Charlie Loudermilk Park in the traditional heart of Buckhead, Loudermilk encountered a huge crowd of well-wishers and a number of fellow Atlanta legends.  Noted architect John Portman, Loudermilk's lifelong friend; former Atlanta Mayor and U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young; former Mayor and Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell; and current Mayor Kasim Reed helped Loudermilk celebrate his 84th birthday on the hot, muggy day. Buckhead Heritage Society President Files Suit Against Street Renaming

Wright Mitchell represents Atlanta Preservation Center, others in legal action against Atlanta City Council, AJC reports

From Patch Staff Reports Buckhead Heritage Society President Wright Mitchell, an attorney, has filed a lawsuit against the Atlanta City Council for its vote to rename a downtown Atlanta streets, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. Mitchell filed the lawsuit on behalf of the Atlanta Preservation Center and individuals against the Atlanta City Council's vote this week to rename Harris Street for renowned architect John Portman, the newspaper said. City Again Postpones Vote on Xernona Clayton Way and John C. Portman Boulevard

Council votes 9-5 to refer renaming of Cone and Harris streets back to a committee

After an emotional debate spanning several hours, the Atlanta City Council again tabled a vote on renaming downtown Cone and Harris streets in honor of two well-known, living Atlantans. The council voted 9-5 to refer back to a committee a proposal to rename Cone Street to Xernona Clayton Way, in honor of the media pioneer, and Harris Street to John C. Portman Boulevard, to acclaim the Atlanta skyline architect.  Council member Kwanza Hall, who represents the much of downtown community where the streets are located, also introduced a new plan to impose a 6-month moratorium on any Atlanta street renaming (see attached letter).
