Peachtree Road Farmers Market Opens for 7th Season

Chef Linton Hopkins will perform a free chef demo at the market at 10 a.m., and 500 shoppers will receive free reusable canvas market bags.

As thousands descend on Atlanta, including Buckhead, for this weekend's NCAA Final Four tournament, about 3,000 people will flock to opening day of the Peachtree Road Farmers Market on Saturday. This year marks the seventh season of the popular Buckhead farmers market, which kicks off Saturday at 8:30 a.m. with the opening bell ringing and market blessing. Market visitors are encouraged to bring their own bells and noisemakers and join the celebration. Chef Linton Hopkins of Restaurant Eugene will offer a free chef demo at 10 a.m. Hopkins helped found the Peachtree Road Farmers Market and last year was named by the prestigious James Beard Foundation as the Southeast's best chef. Spring Awakening: Peachtree Farmers Market Opens Saturday

Buckhead tradition returns to Cathedral of St. Philip

For some Buckhead folks, spring doesn't officially arrive until the Peachtree Road Farmers Market opens. For them, the season hits full bloom this weekend. The farmers market, which unfolds with a sumptious selection of products in the Cathedral of St. Philip parking lot, opens for its sixth season from 8:30 a.m. until noon Saturday. It will remain open until Dec. 15, changing to a 9 a.m. start in the fall. "Bring your own bell and noisemaker to help us open 2012 with a joyful noise," the farmers market said in a tweet at @PtreeFarmersMkt. Bring Kids to Halloween Costume Parade, Contest at Peachtree Farmers' Market Saturday

Event to raise funds for market's permit fees

Kids of all ages, and dogs, can enter a Halloween parade and costume contest Saturday morning at the Peachtree Road Farmers Market. Buckhead's Farm Burger will sell market-inspired sliders, with a portion of the profits going toward the farmers' market fund-raising effort begun with the recent mash-up cooking event. The Halloween costume parade begins at 11 a.m. The market is raising money to help pay for 2012 city permit fees and a city-required police officer so that vendor fees don't have to be increased. The second annual mash-up on Oct. 15 raised $5,877 toward a goal of $6,000, the market said in a news release. More than 2,000 people attended, the farmers market said. Cheese Sold at Farmers' Markets Recalled

Norcross-based AtlantaFresh Artisan Creamery says mozzarella safe

A Norcross-based dairy has issued a recall on mozzarella cheese sold last week at the Peachtree Road Farmers' Market in Buckhead and other farmers' markets. Norcross-based AtlantaFresh Artisan Creamery said in a statement that the recall was a precautionary measure, and "we do not believe there to be any food safety issues." The recall was the result of a routine Ga. Department of Agriculture inspection Tuesday that found a 1-degree temperature discrepancy in the company's pasteurization records, the creamery said. AtlantaFresh Artisan Creamery issued the recall on mozzarella sold last week at six farmers markets in metro Atlanta, according to the Peachtree Farmers' Market Facebook page. I tried to visit this market this morning and there was NO place to park! The cars spilled out on neighborhood streets for blocks. I just went to Trader Joe's, disappointed. Another Buckhead traffic jam and a system overwhelmed that no longer works. : - {   more ›
