The bus signage features a headshot of the former Atlanta mayor and a special thanks for his service to Atlanta and to Buckhead.
Still celebrating 25 years of civic service, two Buckhead Coalition Chairmen have surprised the organization's president Sam Massell with custom signage on the side of a MARTA bus. The banner with Massell's larger-than-life headshot congratulates him for his public service as mayor of Atlanta as well as his service since 1988 as Coalition president. Those responsible for the idea and pro bono arrangements were 2011-2012 chairman Sonny Morris and 2013-2014 chairman Dave Fitzgerald. They chose the MARTA bus location for the signage because Massell, when mayor of Atlanta, was the one who structured the sales tax arrangement for funding the city’s mass transit system and was then successful in getting the referendum passed to put MARTA in …

"Buckhead is the address of choice," Massell said repeatedly in his annual State of Buckhead address to the Buckhead Business Association.
Former Atlanta Mayor and the undisputed “Mayor of Buckhead” Sam Massell told a packed house of about 75 businessmen and women that Buckhead is thriving and headed in a positive direction, due to its effective leadership and partly because of its continued development of more than 3,500 new apartments. Massell delivered his annual “State of Buckhead” address to the Buckhead Business Association at the City Club of Buckhead on Thursday morning, and his message boasted the community’s growth and continued prosperity due to its engaged and strong leadership base. “The state of Buckhead, economically, is one of very sound health,” Massell told Buckhead Patch after the breakfast meeting. “It’s continuing on a positive path.” The Buckhead name …

Sam Massell was a Class of ’48 University of Georgia student, when he was President of the MU Chapter of Phi Epsilon Pi.
An Athens, Georgia fraternity colony, Zeta Beta Tau (ZBT), has installed a plaque to dedicate its Chapter Room to one of its prominent alumni, Sam Massell — former Mayor of Atlanta and currently serving as President of the Buckhead Coalition, a nonprofit civic association in the northern quadrant of Atlanta. As Massell, who served a total of twenty-two years in elected office, opposes naming public property for persons still in life, he has declined suggestions of former dedications in his honor. In this case, however, the fraternity house at 1175 S. Milledge Avenue is off campus and thus not owned by government. Massell was a Class of ’48 University of Georgia student, when he was President of the MU Chapter of Phi Epsilon Pi. This …

Those in favor of preserving the historic Randolph-Lucas home agree a creative solution is needed.
At Tuesday night's meeting of the NPU-B Zoning Committee, strong support was given to the preservation of the Randolph-Lucas House. The general consensus, however, seemed to be that the home would have to be completely relocated (although the best way to go about the move has yet to be determined). So now, Buckhead Patch asks you: Where do you think the best place to relocate the Randolph-Lucas House is? Also, what would the best use for the house be if and when it is moved? Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell recently gave his thoughts on this important topic. Now it is time to let your voice be heard in the comments below!

The Buckhead Coalition President wants the house to be used as an 'Atlanta Mayor’s Mansion' for ceremonial events.
Former Atlanta Mayor and Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell sent a letter on Friday to Hakim Hilliard, attorney for the 2500 Peachtree Condominium Association, suggesting a way to preserve the historic Buckhead Randolph-Lucas House, which is facing a possible demolition, and appease the condo owners at the same time. Here, in full, is the text of Massell’s letter to the McKenna, Long and Aldridge attorney, which was also sent to Buckhead Patch: “Although I am a Board Member of the Buckhead Heritage Society, I’m writing this in my capacity as President of the Buckhead Coalition, which serves as somewhat like the Chamber of Commerce for the Community. It happens I’m also a resident of Peachtree Heights West. “I have not had a formal …

Sam Massell of the Buckhead Coalition sees July's transportation referendum as a chance for the metro area to do something about traffic congestion.
Forty days from Friday, metro Atlanta residents will be voting on a referendum that will fund $8.5 billion in transportation improvements through a regional one percent sales tax. If approved, it will fund a 157-project list that will include many items that will affect transportation and traffic in the inner city. Detailed project maps are available online. The Atlanta office of commercial real estate services provider Cassidy Turley released this week another video as part of its campaign supporting the passage of metro Atlanta’s TSPLOST ballot initiative. Each week until the July 31 vote, Cassidy Turley will release a two-minute video featuring an interview with an Atlanta business or community leader to educate the public about the …
