Buckhead Coalition Dedicates Buck Statue

The "Buckhead Boy" is part of the ongoing "Bucks on the Streets" project.

Beginning its celebration of twenty-five years of public service, the Buckhead Coalition dedicated a buck statue, affectionally called "Buckhead Boy." The statue is part of the current "Bucks on the Street Program." The late James Dickey, National Poet Laureate, made the “Buckhead Boy” famous with his work entitled “Looking For the Buckhead Boys”, which is annually memorialized by friends and graduates of the former North Fulton High School.  Davis, a nationally recognized cartoonist from Athens, has long been the official artist for the North Fulton alumni group, and lent his design to the Buckhead Business Association for their program to generate funds to help develop a Buckhead public trailway under the GA-400 toll way.  This has …

Buckhead Showroom Signals Economic Turnaround

Sub-Zero and Wolf held a ribbon cutting for its new showroom on Thursday.

For former Atlanta Mayor Sam Massell, Thursday's unveiling of the new Sub-Zero, Inc. and Wolf Appliance, Inc. showroom in Buckhead was much more than a typical ribbon cutting — it represented a milestone in the area's economic turnaround.  Massell, along with city and county officials, were on hand to commemorate the opening of the new showroom, which is equipped with a live demonstration kitchen; training rooms, outfitted with advanced audiovisual equipment; and a large common area where guests can relax and enjoy the space. An expansive showcase area was also built to display the latest Sub-Zero and Wolf products, providing designers, architects, and consumers with the opportunity to view and interact with the products. Due to the …

Riot Act Read to Buckhead Bar, Club, Restaurant Owners

As the clock neared 1 p.m., one man had to hustle more chairs into a quickly filling meeting room at the Buckhead Theatre, where the Buckhead Coalition held a meeting to instruct business owners on obeying liquor, noise and special event laws.

As the clock neared 1 p.m., one man had to hustle more chairs into a quickly filling meeting room at the Buckhead Theatre, where the Buckhead Coalition held a meeting Thursday to read the riot act to business owners on obeying liquor, noise and special event laws. One Buckhead attorney suggested clients like his don't feel welcome. "Recently we've started to get more and more complaints" about nusiances like noise, said Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell, with the complaints coming from such areas as the lofts on Roswell Road to the St. Regis on West Paces Ferry to Andrews Drive. "So we felt that we had an opportunity or duty or responsibility to get ahead of the game this time." With that, Massell introduced a panel of six city and …

Seems to me, if the area is zoned for nightclubs, that anyone living in the vicinity would be aware that noise will be a factor in their quality of life. Get over it already!   more ›

Massell says vote will benefit Buckhead

Says Democrats gave in to a larger degree

Buckhead Patch asked Sam Massell, president of the Buckhead Coalition and former Atlanta mayor, for his response to the debt ceiling agreement approved by Congress and sent to President Obama to sign. Because of the legislation, the United States will increase its debt ceiling and not default on its debts, as was feared. Here is Massll's response: "Politics is a process of give and take, mixed with considerable posturing. The more transparency we demand, the greater the volume of rhetoric, and the increased interpretation we do between the lines. The superior organizational system of the Republican party resulted in the Democrats giving in to a larger degree, which means Buckhead — which is largely Republican — will feel its benefits in …

Sam Massell: Buckhead a Part of City

Buckhead Coalition president in opinion article says cheating scandal hits home here too

Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell, in an opinion article for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, says that Buckhead can't isolate itself from the rest of Atlanta. Massell's piece notes that Buckhead schools were not implicated in the APS CRCT cheating scandal. Yet, he says, Buckhead must still see itself as sharing the problems and benefits of the rest of the city. The article appeared Saturday on The Atlanta Journal-Constitution's opinion page.

The mayor either needs to do some research about his northside buckhead APS schools or try not to so foolishly contribute to the cover-up. Shame on those not reporting the ENTIRE story of APS corruption Northside APS included.   more ›

Erroll Davis, Vince Dooley, Sam Massell give back

Trio strong models for continuing to contribute

I'm not a strong Georgia Bulldogs fan, but I still felt a thrill encountering two UGA standouts this week. Journalists are supposed to be "objective," but sometimes those we cover leave us inspired and motivated. First, I heard longtime football coach Vince Dooley speak at the Buckhead Business Association's quarterly luncheon at 103 West. Later Thursday, I was there as former UGA Chancellor Erroll B. Davis Jr. answered questions in his new role as the iterim superintendent of the Atlanta Public Schools. Davis, called upon to put the school system back on course after the CRCT cheating scandal, appeared at a town hall meeting at Garden Hills Elementary.  These two former Bulldogs continue to reflect the best qualities of the public …

Charlie Loudermilk Statue Unveiled in Birthday Surprise

Aaron's founder receives surprise party at Charlie Loudermilk Park

Buckhead icon Charlie Loudermilk received a grand birthday surprise Tuesday morning: A statue of the Aaron's Inc. founder was unveiled at the Buckhead park that bears his name. Upon arriving at Charlie Loudermilk Park in the traditional heart of Buckhead, Loudermilk encountered a huge crowd of well-wishers and a number of fellow Atlanta legends.  Noted architect John Portman, Loudermilk's lifelong friend; former Atlanta Mayor and U.S. Ambassador Andrew Young; former Mayor and Buckhead Coalition President Sam Massell; and current Mayor Kasim Reed helped Loudermilk celebrate his 84th birthday on the hot, muggy day. Members of Loudermilk's family and Aaron's employees also were in attendance. Reed, along with Portman and Young, expressed …
