Westminster President Announces Retirement

The schools president will retire following the next school year.

Westminster Schools President Bill Clarkson announced in a letter to parents and students that he retiring after serving 23 years as the head of the private school. His retirement is effective as of June 30, 2014. He wrote in the letter, “It is with mixed emotions, but extraordinary pride and gratitude that I announce my plans to retire. I have never been in a school family for this long. Since childhood I have been in the family of Christ’s church, and hit has occurred to me that my education and life’s work have been an unfolding story of God’s mysterious ‘calling’ and the opportunities for response to that revelations. Buckhead Schools Feature National Scholarship Winners

The winners will receive $2,500 scholarships.

Several students attending Buckhead schools are among 2,500 students who have won $2,500 National Merit Scholarships. The winners were chosen from more than 15,000 finalists. The National Merit Scholarship Corp. finances the scholarships. The winners are selected by a committee of college admissions officers and high school counselors. Is this article only reporting about private school winners, or were there also winners from the public schools as well? For comparison's sake, it would be interesting to see how public school students achieved versus the 4 private schools listed. It's always such a hot debate and this being a national award may help some draw some conclusions.   more ›

Westminster Student Earns National Scholarship

Daniel Linyee He, a student at The Westminster Schools, has been awarded a National Merit Scholarship by the National Merit Scholarship Corp. Approximately 1,000 high school seniors have won corporate-sponsored National Merit Scholarship awards financed by about 200 corporations, company foundations, and other business organizations. Le is considering a career in business. His scholarship was sponsored by the Georgia-Pacific Foundation. Winners were selected from students who advanced to the Finalist level in the National Merit Scholarship competition and met criteria of their scholarship sponsors. Karen Beaumont tells Westminster students where she finds inspiration

From Patch Reports New York Times bestselling children's author Karen Beaumont visited Westminster Wednesday, reading from her books to pre-first, first and second-grade classes. Beaumont told the students, who gathered in the story-well of Smythe Gambrell Library, where she finds inspiration for her books, according to the school. She brought a box filled with objects that relate to each of her books and played a game to see if the students could guess which book each object represents.

Westminster Students Cut Energy Use

Buckhead school places second in state's Green Cup Challenge

From Patch Reports Westminster's energy reduction efforts earned the school a second place finish in Georgia's Green Cup Challenge, the school announced. During a four-week period, Westminster high school students ate lunch by candlelight, raised the blinds in their classrooms, and studied outside in an effort to save electricity. Their efforts paid off with a 12.4 percent reduction in energy use as compared to baseline averages over the same four-week period during several previous years. The students also celebrated “Polar Day” during the challenge, during which the temperature in high school classroom buildings was set at 60 degrees. Westminster Basketball Teams Raise Money to Fight Cancer

Hoops for Hope event is Friday at game against Therrell

From Patch Reports Westminster's basketball teams and cheerleaders are sponsoring the Hoops for Hope fund-raiser in conjunction with the Wildcats' games against Therrell Friday night. Fans can select either the girls' or boys game and pledge an amount per points scored. All money raised will go to Cure Childhood Cancer. The event will honor boys assistant coach Wright Ward, who has himself battled cancer. Contact Janet Kresser at janetkresser@comcast.net to make your pledge. Buckhead Schools Dedicate Habitat for Humanity House

Lovett, Pace, Westminster join in building home

From Patch Reports School leaders from Lovett, Pace and Westminster on Saturday dedicated a Habitat for Humanity home that teachers and students from the Buckhead private schools built. The house was the 20th Habitat for Humanity home completed by the partnership. Marist and Woodward students also participated in the project, which began Oct. 8. The house is at 1088 Kipling St. Students and teachers from the schools put the finishing touches on the home before the dedication.

Westminster Fifth Graders Give Tribute to Veterans

"Lest We Forget" program celebrates service with verse, song

From Patch Reports Westminster's fifth graders celebrated Veterans Day Friday by performing "Lest We Forget: A Tribute in Song and Verse." The program was dedicated to Lt. Commander Ron Carpinella, command PAO for Combined Joint Task Force Paladin, and Paladin members stationed in Afghanistan. Veterans present for the program included Rear Admiral Martha Gray Herb of Annapolis, Md., who graduated from Westminster in 1973; Joe Hamilton; and World War II veteran Col. J.O. Partain Jr. Emmy-award winner David Drukenmiller, who made the films "D-Day…Down To Earth," "Papa Said….We Should Never Forget" and  "WWII Flying Ace: Robert L. Westminster Alum Ed Helms to Speak at Alma Mater

Noted comic actor from school's class of '92 to appear for 60th anniversary of "Beyond the Gates" speaker series.

Westminster Schools alumnus Ed Helms, known for his roles in "The Hangover" movies and on the TV show "The Office," will speak at his alma mater on Nov. 22 for the 60th anniversary of the school's "Beyond the Gates" speaker series. Helms will speak in the topic, "Late Night at the Office With Ed Helms" from 7:30-8:30 p.m. in the school's Kellett Theatre. A networking reception will be from 7 to 7:30 p.m. The moderator will be Eric Brannen, director of theatre arts. The cost is $10. Attendance to the event is restricted to the Westminster community, and closed to the public, the school said.
