Atlanta Police Say Thefts from Vehicles are Down in Buckhead

Thefts from vehicles were down in January, but robberies spike.

Atlanta Police Maj. Van Hobbs, Buckhead's Zone 2 commander, attended this week's NPU-B meeting and told local residents that thefts from vehicles was down 14 percent in January compared to that of 2012. According to the Reporters Newspaper, Hobbs told NPU-B that Zone 2, "started a process over the holidays where we saturated the area with a holiday detail. We looked at the areas where more cars were being hit and increased patrols up and down Peachtree and Piedmont and other major thoroughfares. And that’s seemed to work out pretty well.” Overall, crime was up 8 percent in Zone 2 for the year 2012. Are you kidding? There have been at least 6 last week. I know that the goodwill on Roswell had five cars smashed and contents stolen, one similar smash and grab on Roswell (Cambridge International Preschool), Open Arms (daycare had various). A teacher was attacked and her laptop stolen at Galloway. There is a real problem going on right now. You need to update this article.   more ›

Buckhead Crime Blotter: July 15 - 21

Man arrested for holding victim at knife point; Purse thieves lead police on vehicle/foot chase.

The following police reports were filed Juy 15 - 21 by Zone 2 of the Atlanta Police Department and submitted to Buckhead Patch. All information is presumed to be accurate. Aggravated Assault 7/15/12 A suspect was arrested by police at 1599 Howell Mill Road NW after he reportedly threw a knife at one victim and held another at knife point. Larceny 7/20/12 An off-duty officer was alerted late morning by staff of Louis Vuitton and Polo at Phipps Plaza, where two male suspects entered the location and reportedly took several purses before leaving without paying. The suspects then fled the scene in a vehicle that was later learned to be stolen. Patrol units spotted the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. While on the interstate, the suspects …

Armed Robberies Reported in Buckhead

The two robberies occurred earlier this month at 2399 Parkland Dr. NE and 2025 Peachtree Road NE.

Two armed robberies recently occurred in Buckhead, according to reports released by the Atlanta Police Department. One victim told police that while walking on the sidewalk at 2399 Parkland Dr. NE on July 21, three males drove up in a black mini-van and robbed him at gunpoint of his iPhone and wallet, which contained credit cards, a debit card and $60 cash. On July 14, a victim told police that he was robbed at gunpoint by two suspects at 2025 Peachtree Road NE, in the parking lot of a business listed as "Banana Wings" in the report. The victim said that he had met at the location to retrieve some items for a friend when he was robbed of his headphones. He was apparently sitting in the vehicle with the suspects when the robbery occurred.  …

'B.A.' Buck Dedicated to Zone 2 Police

The newest addition to the "Bucks on the Street" campaign can be found at Charlie Loudermilk Park.

The Bucks on the Street campaign added its newest addition earlier this week, as sponsors Georgia Commerce Bank and Three dedicated and unveiled the "B.A. Buck" to Zone 2 police in appreciation of their service. The dedication took place at B.A.'s new home, Charlie Loudermilk Park, where Roswell and Piedmont roads intersect.   “Buckhead is a stronger community than ever in 2012 and we are proud to serve this community,” said Chief George Turner of Zone 2. “We appreciate the Bucks on the Street project, Georgia Commerce Bank and Three for providing this unique opportunity to support Livable Buckhead’s efforts.” Bucks on the Street is a community project meant to instill a sense of excitement and pride for those who live, work and/or play in…

Darlington Shooting Victim in Stable Condition

Although police made an arrest at the scene, the search continues for the shooting suspect.

Atlanta Police responded to a shooting on July 7 at 11 a.m. at the Darlington Apartments, 2025 Peachtree St. Upon arrival officers found the 31 year old male victim with a gunshot wound to his leg. According to Atlanta police spokesman Officer John Chafee, the victim said he came to the Darlington Apartments to sell a firearm. While waiting for the buyer to arrive, he was reportedly approached by an unknown male armed with a handgun.  The suspect then shot the victim once in the leg. The victim ran from the location, Chafee said, and apparently dropped his bag that contained two handguns.   Officers checked the area but did not locate the shooting suspect. Zone 2 Commander Maj. Harlow: Career Criminals Need Tougher Sentencing

The problem of career criminals committing burglaries and larcenies in Buckhead has warranted a call for stiffer sentencing from judges.

Zone 2 Community Prosecutor Tiffany Harlow, assigned to Buckhead by the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, used recent significant burglary and larceny arrests as a point for conversation about why career criminals remain roaming the street in Buckhead and elsewhere in Atlanta. Speaking at the recent NPU-B meeting, Harlow said that career criminals often end up back on the street because judges are too sparing. "We've had a problem lately with some of the judges being pretty lenient on punishment," she said. Harlow explained she used the recent arrests in Buckhead to produce recommendations to begin prosecuting these cases and take them "all the way." "We are not gonna take easy pleas anymore," she said. JT, that is good to know. Crime stories always get a lot of views on Buckhead Patch, but I would prefer to live in a community that is as safe as possible. The police in Zone 2 do a great job, though.   more ›
