The problem of career criminals committing burglaries and larcenies in Buckhead has warranted a call for stiffer sentencing from judges.
Zone 2 Community Prosecutor Tiffany Harlow, assigned to Buckhead by the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office, used recent significant burglary and larceny arrests as a point for conversation about why career criminals remain roaming the street in Buckhead and elsewhere in Atlanta. Speaking at the recent NPU-B meeting, Harlow said that career criminals often end up back on the street because judges are too sparing. "We've had a problem lately with some of the judges being pretty lenient on punishment," she said. Harlow explained she used the recent arrests in Buckhead to produce recommendations to begin prosecuting these cases and take them "all the way." "We are not gonna take easy pleas anymore," she said. Police have arrested a suspect reportedly responsible for recent burglaries at Frank Ski's restaurant, as well as another suspect tracked back to numerous vehicle larcenies in the area.
Not only is violent crime down in Buckhead, but Atlanta police made several significant arrests recently that have had an impact on both vehicle larcenies and commercial burglaries, according to Zone 2 Commander Maj. Van Hobbs at Tuesday’s meeting of Neighborhood Planning Unit - B. At the meeting, which was held at Cathedral of Christ the King, Hobbs said police recently caught a suspect that shoplifted and then attempted to break into a car as well. As it turns out, the suspect has an extensive criminal history including robbery, burglary, larceny and auto theft. Confirming recent data and information provided by APD Zone 2, nearly half of last week's police reports filed were either vehicle larcenies or automobile thefts.
Recent studies, as well as information provided by APD Zone 2 Commander Maj. Van Hobbs, indicates that auto thefts and larcenies are a major issue facing Buckhead. Nearly 50-percent of the 119 crimes reported in Zone 2 for the previous week were larcenies from automobiles or automobile thefts. NW - On June 6 a victim reported that his 2002 Cadillac Escalade had been entered and several items had been stolen, including $2200 in cash, four hub caps and a gold necklace. He took time to to address issues by Buckhead Patch readers and talk about how he is approaching his new job.
Maj. Van Hobbs was named the Atlanta Police Department's new Zone 2 commander in late April. While he is still new to the position, he took time to speak with Buckhead Patch on Monday to respond to concerns voiced by our readers. He also talked about his first few weeks on the job and what he sees as the biggest crime related issues facing Buckhead. On recent burglaries in North Buckhead: Hobbs said that while burglaries have indeed been up in the last several weeks, burglaries are down 11-percent overall and down eight-percent from the same time period last year. JT, that is good to know. Crime stories always get a lot of views on Buckhead Patch, but I would prefer to live in a community that is as safe as possible. The police in Zone 2 do a great job, though.   more ›
