On July 11, 1733 aboard the William and Sarah, Georgia's first Jewish settlers arrived unexpectedly in Savannah. A number of these Jewish families worked together to form Congregation Mickve Israel in Savannah, the third oldest synagogue in America. A descendant of one of these families, Atlanta Journal-Constitution freelance journalist Carolyn Wildes Cunningham, will discuss why Gen. James Oglethorpe allowed the Jewish settlers to stay.
