Sign Up for Hands on Atlanta's Day of Service Jan. 16

Chastain Park work among projects on MLK Day

Hands on Atlanta is seeking to sign up 3,000 volunteers for more than 50 projects on the organization's 17th annual Day of Service on Monday, Jan. 16.

The volunteers will give more than 10,000 hous of service, the organization said in an announcment. Volunteers can sign up at www.handsonatlanta.org.

In Buckhead, volunteers will work with the on various projects. Also, help will be given to Atlanta Cares for literacy programs and to donate art and crafts to a senior citizens' home.

This year’s Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service marks the inauguration of the organization's Civic Leadership Program, "a grant competition designed to equip civic leaders to create and execute innovative, ongoing and volunteer-driven initiatives to alleviate local poverty.", the organization said.

The day kicks off at 8:30 a.m. with two signature projects hosted by Delta Air Lines and Alston & Bird.

In partnership with Hosea Feed the Hungry & Homeless, Delta's  “Touch the Heart, Feed the Body & Warm the Soul” project at Carver High School will  assemble 6,000 bagged lunches for distribution to those in need in Atlanta and package more than 10,000 recycled fleece blankets collected from the airline's aircraft fleet for distribution to Atlanta’s homeless population and community shelters. A Presidential Volunteer Service Award will be awarded during this project.

Volunteers from Alston & Bird will work with  graduates of the Boys & Girls Club’s Keystone Leadership Program to paint several murals throughout the Boys and Girls Club facility as well as prepare the organization’s garden for spring planting. The event will include a keynote address from a 17-year old graduate of the program.
