Grassroots Petition Opposes Both APS Redistricting Options

North Atlanta cluster group calls for elementary boundaries to remain the same

A grassroots petition by a group called the Voices for the North Atlanta Cluster opposes both demographers' options for APS redistricting and calls for current elementary school boundaries to remain the same.

The petition by "Voices for the North Atlanta Atlanta Cluster" was launched by two parents, who reached out to parents throughout the community, according to a Buckhead parent involved in the movement. No PTA, school council or neighbrhood organization is involved, the parent said. Here is a link to the petition.

The petition, to be sent to APS School Superintendent Erroll Davis, says, "We have serious doubts regarding the ability of Option A or Option B to timely and economically address the capacity needs of the North Atlanta cluster."

In a section titled "Elementary School Capacity," the petition opposes construction of a new elementary school and requests that "the boundaries of the six elementary schools in the North Atlanta Cluster remain unchanged." The petition says that capacity issues at E. Rivers, Garden Hills and Morris Brandon can be addressed through the addtion of classrooms at E. Rivers and Brandon and adding a primary center at Garden Hills.

The petition also says "while we support the mission to have one high school for the North Atlanta Cluster, we believe the the new North Atlanta High School should be built to a capacity that supports the currently zoned North Atlanta Cluster." It opposes a proposal to move students from Morningside and Centennial Place into the cluster.

A proposed third middle school is also opposed. "There is ample capacity at Sutton and North Atlanta to house the entire North Atlanta Cluster's middle school population without spending money to build a third middle school," the petition says.
