Furman Bisher's Funeral Will Be Saturday in Buckhead

Legendary AJC sports columnist died Sunday at age 93

The funeral for Furman Bisher, the legendary sports columnist for The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at in Buckhead.

Bisher, who lived for years in Buckhead while he was raising his sons as a single parent, died Sunday at age 93 at his home in Fayette County, the newspaper reported.

A nationally known writer, Bisher was renowned for his brilliant columns, especially his coverage of golf, baseball and college football. His memorable work on the Masters in Augusta played a significant role in building the tournament's success.

He also was known for his interviews with Shoeless Joe Jackson, one of the participants in baseball's Black Sox scandal, and Ty Cobb, the baseball great known as "the Georgia Peach."
